When I used to have an early morning flight in bus, I cursed the hour. Nowadays, I’m more likely to marvel at the paintedsky at sunrise.
If my flight was delayed or cancelled, I made it a point to show my disdain for their incompetence to every employee I encountered. NowI figure they’re doing the bestwith what they have to work with, and try to remain cheerful and make the best ofit. And when an airline continually demonstrates it’s inability to provide acceptableservice, I take my business elsewhere.
When I was at the nude beachlast week (yes, your favorite blogger prefers the au naturel tanning spots), there were a few people there definitely on the north side of 300 pounds. In the past I would have muttered something to myself about them spoiling the view. Now I lose the judgment and am happy they’re comfortable with their own bodies.
So what changed?
My travel agent is still a sadist, most American airlines are still dreadful, and the population isn’t getting any skinnier! (All said with a smile. Okay, a weak smile.)
What changed is my perspective.
I’m still impatient with lousy service, and would prefer to wake up when I finish sleeping. But getting irritated doesn’t help anything. And I have so many issues of my own to work on, that doesn’t leave enough time to be judgmental of others.
As W Mitchell who we talked about last post likes to say, it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you choose to respond to it. When he became paralyzed and had most of his fingers burned off, he made a choice: Insteadof focusing on the 1,000 things he couldn’t do any longer, he focuses on the 9,000 things he still can do amazing.
So what about you?
What is your perspective? How do you treat people around you when things aren’t going the way you want? Do you curse the hour or celebrate the sunrise? Truth is, shit happens. To allof us.
The real secret to peace and prosperity is the perspective you choose to see the world through.
So what are you choosing today?
